Malkiat Singh Nanuan

Our beloved Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather, Malkiat Singh Nanuan, passed peacefully on the morning of May 2, 2024, in Edmonton, Canada at the age of 110.

Malkiat Singh Nanuan was born into a farming family on October 19, 1913, in the village of Chak #113 Govindpur in modern-day Pakistan. He resided there until Partition, when his family relocated to Heon in Punjab, India. He married and raised his family in Heon, first leaving for Canada in 2001. He traveled back and forth spending time with his children and grandchildren in both countries before emigrating permanently to Canada in 2019.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his surviving children, Sital Singh Nanuan (m. Nasib Kaur Nanuan), Kuldeep Singh Nanuan (m. Balvir Kaur Nanuan), Gursewak Singh Nanuan (m. Darshan Kaur Nanuan), Kulwinder Kaur Badwal (m. Rashpal Singh Badwal) and Gurdev Singh Nanuan (m. Kulvir Kaur Nanuan), his grandchildren, Rajvindra Singh Nanuan(m. Roxanne Theresa Nanuan), BarinderPal Singh Nanuan, Rupinder Kaur Nanuan, Surjit Singh Nanuan (m. Ranjit Kaur Nanuan), Harpreet Singh Nanuan (m. Mariam Nanuan), Tajinder Singh Saggi (m. Rajvinder Kaur Saggi), Navninder Kaur (m. Satnam Singh), Rajwant Kaur (m. Kamaljit Singh Saini), Kulwant Kaur (m. Gurpreet Singh), Satinder Kaur (m. Charanjit Singh), Manjinder Singh Nanuan (m. Pardeep Kaur Nanuan), Simarjit Kaur Badwal-Nanuan (m. Navninder Singh Badwal), Ravinder Kaur (m. Manjinder Singh), Bhupinder Singh Pabla (m. Harpreet Kaur Pabla), Harvinder Singh Nanuan (m. Harvinder Kaur Nanuan), Baljit Kaur (m. Rajwinder Singh), Rajwinder Kaur (m. Jagjit Singh), Parveen Singh Badwal, Mandeep Kaur Badwal, and Ramanpreet Singh Badwal, his great grandchildren, and numerous extended family and friends.

Malkiat Singh Nanuan was preceded in death by his wives, Jeet Kaur Nanuan (d. 1969), and Mohinder Kaur Nanuan (d. 1995), his children, Kuldeep Kaur Saggi (d. 2021, m. Kewal Singh Saggi),  Makhan Singh Nanuan (d. 2022, m. Jasvir Kaur Nanuan), Satwant Kaur Pabla (d. 2024, m. Darshan Singh Pabla), and grandson Karendeep Singh Nanuan (d. 2008).

He had a deep love for family and community, and would often be seen riding his bicycle or walking to visit friends and relatives for tea and conversation. His grandchildren have fond memories of the many stories he told, and of Papa Ji reading piles of newspapers and avidly watching the evening news. He was also very devout and spent many hours in prayer, especially in his later years. Papa Ji will always be remembered for his warmth, his smile, his kind heart, and his quiet strength.

A funeral service will be held at Edmonton Crematorium & Funeral Home, located at 6403 Roper Rd NW, Edmonton, on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 1:00 PM, followed by prayers at Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha. There will also be a Bhog Shri Sehaj Path at Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha on May 11, 2024.
